Rest of 9.1

We wrapped up section 9.1 today in class by looking at a couple of examples.  Specifically we looked at each of the 4 cases.

1 soloution - 1 point of intersection
infinite solutions - lines are coincident (on top of one another, or the same line)
no solutions (2 seperate cases) either lines are parallel and non-coincident OR lines are skewed, that is not parallel but still not intersecting.

I will assign offical homework for this section in class on Thursday...

Section 9.1 (Part I)

We got into section 9.1 today.  We are studying the intersection of lines with planes, as well as lines with other lines in 3-space.

Each of the above examples looks at lines intersecting (or being parallel to) a plane.  We will pick up from here in class on Tuesday and look specifically at how to interpret lines that are skewed.

HOMEWORK:  READ SECTION 9.1 in your TEXT IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY DONE SO!!!

Assigned Work

As per your request, below you will find the suggested practice problems from section 8.4 and section 8.5.  All of these questions involve Equations of Planes - Vector, Parametric and Cartesian (scalar) forms.

From 8.4 - pages 459 and 460
#'s 1, 3, 5, 9, 10, 13 and 15

From 8.5 - pages 468 and 469
#'s 1, 5, 6, 8, 11, 12 and 15

If you have questions and comment at some point this weekend I will make it a point to check the blog at least once each night (Friday, Saturday and Sunday)  I will probably check more often than that though as I will be locked up in my house MARKING all weekend!!!

NOTE:  The plan is to move into Chapter 9, Section 9.1 in class on Monday.

Section 8.5

We kind of rushed through this section a little bit.  We looked at two or three examples.  You are going to have to go back and read the last example on your own...this involves finding the angle that is formed between two planes.

Be sure to complete the above questions that we did not get to finish on your own.  I will try and post the solutions on the blog...maybe one of you can provide a solution under the comment section for me :)

Section 8.4

We have moved onto equations of planes in three space.  Today we looked at the vector and parametric equations.

No formal homework tonight.  We will double up on Wednesday or Thursday this week :)-

Re-read section 8.4 at home tonight as well as section 8.5 as we will look at teh Cartesian (ie. scalar) Equation of a Plane in class tomorrow.
